The Birdman petroglyph site is located in the Black Mountain Wilderness area, north of Barstow, CA. It’s a very unique petroglyph, even selected by the AIA (American Institute of Archaeology) as its logo, at one time. Just under the Birdman is a well-used metate (grinding stone used for grinding seeds into flour or meal). There are several petroglyphs in this area, many being overtaken by brightly colored lichen. This location also includes one of the four known Tillman signatures (click here to learn more).
The route to this location can be quite challenging, as the sand can get very deep. So, I highly recommend a good 4-wheel drive vehicle with proper tires, low tire pressure and recovery tools (e.g., Hi-Lift jack, tread plates, etc.). It would be very easy to get bogged down here and there’s no cell service.
