The Bittersprings Petroglyphs area (not the real name) is a stunning site located in southern NV. It contains hundreds of petroglyphs on both sides of a wash (and a few outside the main panel area), making it a walkable art gallery. Unfortunately, with the main gallery being in a wash, you can see the effects the weather has had over the millennia. There were lower panels that once contained hundreds of petroglyphs, now almost completely weathered away. Too bad…I imagine there were some truly amazing designs and stories written on the rock face. And, several of the higher panels have had the darker, outer surface of the rock break away.
Much of the rock art at this location is geometric in pattern, but there are still many human (anthropomorphic) and animal (zoomorphic) like scenes. There are also some rather rare and unique designs, like: a potential family or hunting group, an upside down human figure, which is often thought of to be depicting falling, or death. Just to name a few.
There are still many glyphs to see, mainly in the higher panels above where the flowing water would be. But, it’s only a matter of time before Mother Nature reclaims these, too.
