Buffington Pockets is an awesome area with stunningly colored rocks (purple, orange, red, yellow), wind-carved keyholes and hoodoos, natural springs, old mines and dams, steep canyons, and several ancient petroglyphs. It’s only about 50 – 60 miles north of
Las Vegas, close to the Valley of Fire state park (another great area). You can take the Back Country Byway from Lake Mead through the Muddy Mountains and connect to Valley of Fire. There are several very rough sections that’ll require a high-clearance 4-wheel drive. To really appreciate this area, you need to spend a few days out hiking and take advantage of all it has to offer. This area can be popular with off-roading groups and camping.

just came across your site and will use it often. have travelled the Bittersprings Byway with the Sun City Mesquite Offroad Adventures Club and noted the Snowy Owl art on the old dam in Buffington Pockets. Looks about five years old or so and noticed it was not in your photos of the dam. Have a good photo of the day with its art if you are interested.

If you want a photo of the dam, this from Feb 2022.
