The Groom Mining District is one of the older mining areas of Nevada. Discovery of lead and silver in the 1860’s enticed prospectors and miners to head west. The Groom Mine operated from around 1870 to the mid-1870’s. The mine was reopened several times, but finally shuttered for good around World War I.
The surrounding area is famous for the dry lake that bears it’s name (Groom Dry Lake). The town of Rachel, NV is located just down HWY 375 (aka the Extraterrestrial Highway).

This mining property had been owned by the Sheahan family since the 1800s until the United States Air Force did a condemnation on the property since it was too close to their operations in Area 51. Their ownership of this property should have taken presidence over what the government, but once again the government did something immoral and unethical.
