I tried searching to find out how this area got it’s unique name…you figure with a name like Hell’s Half Acre that there would have to be a good story to go with it. But, my searches didn’t turn up anything related to the name. It’s located in the South Pahroc Range and is filled with many weathered and rounded boulders. It looks very similar to the Wonderland of Rocks area of Joshua Tree National Park, but with a LOT less people (in fact, I never see another person out here). There’s an annual dirt bike (motorcycle) race held in the early spring and there are endless trails for dirt bikes, ATVs and 4x4s. I found a few different petroglyphs, including one panel with a long line of big horn sheep. I also came across a couple of grinding stones (aka metates). I’m sure there are a lot more petroglyphs in this area, so I’ll be back to explore some more.
By the way, if anyone knows how this area got its name, please let me know by contacting me via my Contact Me page. THANKS!
