Life Size Sheep Panel
Life sized grouping of big horn sheep…click to enlargeClick to enlarge
I won’t give away the specific location for this life size sheep panel, as it’s unpublished and not very well known, therefore it’s still very pristine (no signs of damage, graffiti, etc.). In a very generalized location it’s in the Great Basin area of Lincoln County, NV. There are many very old petroglyphs in this area, with several of them looking to be generational (based on older faded petroglyphs being over-written by newer ones). You’ll see lot of depictions of big horn sheep and atlatls, showing the importance of the big horn sheep to the ancients. The atlatls pre-date the bow & arrow, thus helping to age the rock art.Click to enlarge
What makes this site really unique is a free-standing boulder with three almost life sized big horn sheep: one large, one very small and one medium. This could potentially illustrate a family group. This panel also contains an atlatl over the sheep, as well as one that appears to be in the backside of the large sheep. This is the largest, most worked (pecked, not scratched) panel I’ve come across in the Great Basin area. Very unique and special!
