Nampaweap is one of the largest rock art sites in the Arizona strip, near the Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument.  Nampaweap means “foot canyon” in Paiute language.  There are thousands of ancient Native American images on hundreds of basalt (volcanic) rocks.  The estimates on the age of these petroglyphs are between 10,000 to 1,500 years-old.  This appears to have been a highly sacred site, with several birthing scenes, fertility images, shamanic figures, along with lots of zoomorphs.  The hike is rather easy, so take your time to explore, as the images are spread throughout a 3/4 mile corridor.
