All throughout the desert southwest are examples of petrified wood. But, what makes this area so special is the sheer amount and concentration of petrified wood…it’s everywhere! There are two large hills (and their surrounding areas) littered with every shape and size of petrified wood. From very large sections of logs, to small fragments. Intermixed with the wood is volcanic rock. You will even find some pieces of petrified wood encased in old lava flow. I was curious about how much wood was under the surface, so I dug away some dirt with my hand and there was plenty more under the surface, too.
