The pictures in this gallery were taken in and around the Piute Range & Castle Mountains. The Piute Range gets it’s name from the Southern Paiute Indians that have inhabited these lands for thousands of years. It seems to be a common misspelling, as you see the same thing at nearby Fort Piute.
These mountains border California and Nevada, in the heart of the Mojave Desert. All throughout this area are signs of our ancient and historic past. This is a very rough and desolate area, where it can be easy to get yourself into trouble, if you’re not prepared (extreme heat, lack of water, venomous snakes, scorpions, spiders, no cell coverage, etc.). But, if you take the proper precautions, it offers a great deal of recreational activities. The varying terrain, mountains, caves, washes, etc. all have opportunities to surprise you with their beauty, and more (like coming across thousands of years old petroglyphs, lithic scatter, etc.).
