Randsburg is a small, historic mining town located in Kern County, California. The town bills itself as a living ghost town (there are still 51 full-time residents). Besides the historic aspect to the town, it has a certain “quirkiness” to it. It’s in the heart of mining and off-roading territory, so it gets a lot of visitors from those spending their days on the thousands of miles of dirt trails. The town was established as Rand Camp after gold was discovered in 1895, with the post office established in 1896. There are a few operating businesses in the town, built around servicing the many off-roaders (a saloon, small supply store, gas). Every September, the town hosts the annual Western Celebration Days, with events like Old West gun fight re-enactments, panning for gold, live bands and more. Many of the mines are on private property, so please don’t trespass and be respectful of their property. But, if you’re into mining history, it’s definitely a cool place to visit, as there’s a TON of old equipment sprinkled throughout the area.
