Whitney Pocket is a popular undeveloped camping and staging area (for off-roading) in the greater Gold Butte area, near Virgin Peak. It’s made up of some beautiful Aztec sandstone formations. There’s an old dam and other structures from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, left by ranchers, miners and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Beyond Whitney Pocket, there are lots of pre-historic remnants of ancient civilizations spread throughout the area (petroglyphs, pictographs, lithic scatter, pottery shards, etc.), as well as historic sites (mines, ghost towns). Plus, you can work your way to the undeveloped and remote side of Lake Mead for some great solitude on the water.
